Freiburg im Breisgau – 25 minutes from the hotel
Germany's sunniest city awaits with its mighty Minster, the historic Bächle water channels, a lively university atmosphere and the Black Forest right on its doorstep.
Germany's sunniest city
Minster, Bächle &
university flair
Freiburg im Breisgau is one of Germany's most charming cities: grand enough for culture, lively enough for a student atmosphere, and large enough for a wonderfully varied offering – without the anonymity of a metropolis.
Its landmark is the Freiburg Minster, one of the finest Gothic churches in Germany. The Bächle – small medieval water channels – run through the entire city centre. And the university brings a youthful, cosmopolitan energy.
Sights
The best of Freiburg
Freiburg Minster
Freiburg's landmark: the Gothic cathedral, begun in the 12th century, towers over the entire city centre. Its spire is considered one of the most perfectly realised Gothic towers in the world.
Old town & Bächle
The Freiburg Bächle are medieval water channels that flow through the city centre. They once supplied water – today they are a city symbol and a welcome way to cool off.
Schlossberg – panoramic views
Rising above the old town, the Schlossberg offers a wonderful view across Freiburg, the Black Forest and, on clear days, as far as the Vosges. Reached on foot or by funicular.
Augustiner Museum
The Augustiner Museum, housed in a former monastery, holds important works of medieval and Renaissance art – including Romanesque sculpture and paintings from the Upper Rhine.
Botanical Garden
The botanical garden of the University of Freiburg lies in the heart of the city and is free to enter. Tropical houses, outdoor plantings and an alpine garden delight nature lovers.
Schauinsland cable car
The Schauinsland cable car runs from Horben up to 1,284 metres – with magnificent views over Freiburg and the Black Forest. The base station is about 15 minutes from the city centre.
